Recognizing and Responding to Students in Distress
Please see the Mental Health Action Plan for additional information.
Recognizing the Signs
While stress is normal, prolonged or severe reactions may indicate a student is struggling to cope. Signs of distress can vary in intensity and number, and may include:
-
Noticeable drop in academic performance
-
Skipped classes or low attendance
-
Intense or inappropriate emotional responses
-
Withdrawal or unusual interactions
-
Disruptive behavior in class
-
Depressed mood, low energy, poor hygiene
When to Be More Concerned
Some behaviors may point to a more serious or urgent issue, including:
-
Disorganized speech or thought
-
Loss of reality (e.g., hallucinations or delusional thinking)
-
Statements about suicide or hopelessness
-
Threats of harm to self or others
How to Help
If you choose to approach a student:
-
Speak privately and with compassion.
-
Focus on specific behaviors you’ve observed.
-
Express concern and willingness to help, while recognizing your own limits.
-
Contact Counseling & Consultation Services (CCS) at (309) 556-3052 to consult with a staff member.
In emergency situations (e.g., the student seems out of control, unsafe, or detached from reality), do not hesitate to call IWU Campus Safety at (309) 556-1111 and/or Dean of Students Office at (309) 556-3111. Try to stay calm, listen, and avoid leaving the student alone until help arrives.
Making a Referral
If the situation is beyond your comfort or ability to manage:
-
Be direct: “It might be helpful to talk to a counselor about this.”
-
Normalize counseling: It’s a healthy, common way to seek support.
-
If the student is reluctant to utilize CCS services, suggest calling or texting PATH (24/7 anonymous crisis line) at (309) 827-4005 or the National Suicide Prevention & Mental Healt Crisis Lifeline at 988.
-
Offer to help them contact or visit CCS.
