Professor Horwitz is our modern Europeanist. He teaches a survey of modern global
history and more specialized courses about Germany, the Holocaust, and Vienna. In
1990 Gordon published In the Shadow of Death: Living Outside the Gates of Mauthausen, a study of the way in which the civilian population surrounding an Austrian concentration
camp related to the camp. Most recently, he has authored Ghettostadt: Łódź and the Making of a Nazi City (Harvard University Press, 2008). In 2015 he was appointed to the Davis U. Merwin
Endowed Professorship in History.
