Hispanic Studies New Curriculum
This is an example course plan based on the 2022-2023 University Catalog; your actual
schedule may deviate from this example. Your faculty advisor will work with you to
select appropriate courses.
As an IWU student, it is your responsibility to track your progress each semester
towards completing graduation requirements using the MyIWU degree audit tool.
Fall Semester
Choose one of the following depending on language placement scores:
- SPAN 203 Spanish as a World Language (G)
- SPAN 230 Medical Spanish & Cultural Competency (U)
- SPAN 303 Communicating Across Cultures in the Spanish-speaking World
- SPAN 307 Reading and Writing Culture (W, G)
In addition take:
Spring Semester
Choose one of the following:
- SPAN 203 Spanish as a World Language (G)
- SPAN 250 Business Spanish in its Cultural Context (G)
- SPAN 303 Communicating Across Cultures in the Spanish-speaking World
- SPAN 308 Introduction to Literature (Lit, G) (or SPAN 303 if not completed in the Fall)
In addition take:
- General Education Course (or Gateway if not completed in the Fall)
- General Education Course
- General Education Course
- Physical Education (PEY)
May Term & Summer Term
- Optional
Fall Semester
- Span 307 Reading and Writing Culture (W,G) (or Span 303 if not completed in Year 1)

Study Abroad
- A study abroad experience in a Spanish-speaking country is highly recommended for Hispanic Studies majors and minors.
- Visit the Study Abroad Office and discuss options with your academic advisor.
Additional Information
- If an entering Spanish major does not place out of the basic sequence, then they must complete the basic sequence before taking SPAN 303.
- SPAN 303 is the prerequisite for SPAN 307 and SPAN 308.
- Students planning to double major in Hispanic Studies and Secondary Education should also follow the Hispanic Studies/Secondary Education Course Plan .
