Mission Statement

IWU Arnold Health Services (AHS) strives to provide high quality, comprehensive health care that enables students to achieve their academic and intellectual potential, while developing healthy lifestyles

AHS is staffed by an Advanced Practice Nurse, a Registered Nurse, and a part-time Carle Director.  On campus health services are available to all registered students at no charge.  

Schedule, Reschedule, or Cancel an Appointment

Please call AHS directly--don't email for appointments--this will take longer.  If no one answers, please leave a message including your cell number and the spelling of your last name.  Also, make sure your voice mail box is set up and is not full.  Please check below to schedule an appointment online for certain ailments.

Sick visits

Minor emergency treatment cuts, burns, sprains, strains 

Diagnostic testing COVID, strep, mono, influenza, blood glucose, STD,  pregnancy, hemoglobin, urinalysis 

Allergy & Birth Control (depo-provera) Injections supplied by the patient with physician’s instructions 

Medication  anxiety/depression, birth control, antibiotics, over the counter meds (cough drops, pain relievers, antiseptic ointment, nausea medication, decongestants, antihistamines)    

Referrals for diagnostic testing and specialists including lab tests and x-rays (insurance will be billed)

Medical equipment  loaned wheelchairs and crutches

Immunization Requirements

All incoming students are required by State of Illinois law to provide a copy of their immunization history to the university within six weeks of the first day of classes. Failure to comply will cause the student's registration for next semester to be place on HOLD. 

Required Vaccines:

  • MEASLES, MUMPS, RUBELLA (MMR) VACCINE
    • Two doses of MMR at least 28 days apart after 12 months of age
    • Those born after January 1, 1957 are exempt
  • TETANUS, DIPHTHERIA, PERTUSSIS (TDAP) VACCINE
    • Three doses of DTP, DTAP, DT, TD, OR TDAP with one dose of TDAP in the past 10 years
  • MENINGOCOCCAL QUADRIVALENT (ACWY) VACCINE
    • One dose given after the age of 16

Vaccines recommended by the ACHA : 

  • COVID-19 VACCINE  Three doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or two doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Students are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after the last dose of any series.
  • INFLUENZA VACCINE
  • SEROGROUP B MENINGOCOCCAL VACCINE
  • HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS (HPV) VACCINE

Exemptions:

  • RELIGIOUS EXEMPTION
  • MEDICAL EXEMPTION
    • Any student requiring a medical exemption should submit a written statement by their medical provider indicating the nature and probable duration of the medical condition or circumstances that contraindicates those immunizations.

All students need to create a user profile with their IWU student number and IWU email.  In the portal, students can schedule certain appointments, upload documents, complete forms, and securely communicate with AHS staff.

Required information for New & Transfer Students can be completed on the portal as follows: 
  • Medical History Form
  • TB Screening Form
  • Informed Consent for Treatment (different forms depending on age of student)

In addition to these forms, students need to enter dates of vaccinations AND upload a copy of the vaccination records.

Self-scheduling is now available for: 

 Ear ache
 Pink Eye – Conjunctivitis
 Pregnancy testing
 Sore throat- Strep testing
 STD testing- Sexually Transmitted Disease
 UTI testing- Urinary Tract Infection

If you need to be seen for other reasons than those listed above,  please call AHS at 309-556-3107.

  • Check your syllabus for your professor’s attendance policy.  It's important to know what might happen if you miss class, an assignment or an exam.  If you have questions, reach out to your professor directly.
  • Notify your professor (in advance if possible) of your absence due to illness  
  • Please note:  Arnold Health Services does not typically provide notes for absences due to illness.
  • Contact Arnold Health Services (AHS) at 309-556-3107 if you need an appointment.  To mitigate illness on IWU campus, AHS does not­ take walk-ins.  If you are experiencing COVID symptoms (congestion, running nose, cough, headache, fever) you may be asked to take an at-home COVID test.  AHS does not have at-home COVID tests available. If the test is positive, please let AHS know via the online student portal or phone. 

Due to high demand, please understand you may not be able to get a same-day appointment at Arnold Health Services.  If you need to be seen same day, consider contacting Carle Convenient Care Bloomington at 309-556-7556 located at 3024 E. Empire.  Remember to bring your insurance card, as your health insurance provider will be billed. 

  • Stay home and away from others.
  • Wear a mask!
  • Seek treatment if you experience breathing issues or chest pain.
  • Return to normal activities (attending class, work, practice) when:
    1. Symptoms are improving
    2. You are fever free without medication for 24 hours
  • After you return to normal activities, wear a mask for the next five days.
  • Practice good hygiene such as hand washing, covering coughs/sneezes, cleaning surfaces, maintaining distance from others, and obtaining fresh air.

All full-time students are automatically  enrolled in the IWU Accident & Sickness Plan provided by United Healthcare. Coverage extends from August 1st through July 31st of each year. The full cost of the plan is charged to student billing accounts in the fall term.

Waiver for IWU Accident & Sickness Insurance Plan

Participation in the Plan can be waived if the student has comparable insurance coverage and completes a waiver each year by August 30th at www.iwu.edu/healthinsurance. To be considered comparable, a plan must meet the minimum essential coverage requirements of the Affordable Care Act. No exceptions can be made for waivers received after the deadline. Any changes to a student’s personal health insurance coverage must be reported immediately to the IWU Business Office.

IWU advises all students and families who chose to waive to contact their health insurance carrier to determine what benefits and providers are available in the Bloomington-Normal area. IWU recommends students have an insurance card or access to their insurance plan information available to use while on campus.  Students with large deductibles or large out-of-network charges may consider purchasing the Accident & Sickness Plan.

Participation in the student health insurance plan is mandatory for students on F-1 and J-1 visas sponsored by IWU. These students are automatically enrolled and cannot waive out. 

Accident Insurance

Every full-time student is provided accident coverage called the Student Accident Plan. This coverage is in effect only for the academic year. Coverage starts the first day students are required to be on campus and ends the last day students are required to be on campus. Coverage remains in effect over breaks, so long as the student is enrolled in the next academic term.

Injuries must be reported to Arnold Health Services within 24 hours.

What to do if you have a claim:

  • Forms are available online at  www.iwu.edu/healthinsurance - Student Accident Plan.
  • Submit within 90 days of injury
  • File only one claim form per accident and include copies of provider invoices.
  • For students who are covered by an HMO/PPO, obtain pre-authorization for all services or benefits will be reduced by 50%.
