Office of Diversity & Inclusion

Many students find their home on campus in the Office of Diversity & Inclusion. ODI is dedicated to the promotion of a campus community that appreciates, encourages, and celebrates diversity. They do this by advocating for students, creating spaces for cultural celebration, promoting leadership development, and providing opportunities for education and reflection about multicultural identities, privilege, and gender issues as well as topics on different world views. Every year, ODI hosts Lavender Graduation, Multicultural Graduation, and numerous Diversity, Dialogue, and Dignity (3D) events to educate the campus community. Other programming ODI provides include the Peer Mentorship Program and Summer Enrichment Program. 

The Peer Mentoring Program is designed to support first-year, underrepresented students in their transition to IWU by providing a student mentor who will provide support and guidance and programs and activities that will enhance students’ social and personal adjustment to IWU. 

Summer Enrichment Program is open to current Illinois Wesleyan students of color and international students. As participants of the program, students have a paid internship, learn from formal training workshops and work on a summer-long project servicing the Bloomington-Normal community.

 

Internships

While internships are not required for many degree programs at IWU, they are beneficial. Internships provide students with experience in their field of study, are often paid, can sometimes be counted for course credit, and look great on resumes when applying for jobs after graduation. The Hart Career Center, your academic advisor, and your professors can help you find an internship or research opportunity to advance your college experience and career. In a competitive job market, internships, research, study abroad, and campus involvement can help set candidates apart from one another, as well as showcasing numerous soft skills (such as time management, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving). The Hart Career Center also hosts annual Career Fairs and Career Immersion Excursion.
