Middle Grade Endorsement
Middle Grade (5-8) Endorsements: IWU offers coursework that leads to Middle Grade subsequent endorsements in Language Arts, Social Science, General Science, and Mathematics. Middle Grade endorsements allow one to teach in a specific content area in grades 5 through 8 or in grades 5 and 6 in a Self Contained General Education class (6 hours in each content area to be taught). Middle Grade endorsements require a content specific methods course. Some coursework at the upper level is strongly suggested. Passage of the appropriate content test. At IWU the classes that meet the Middle Grade endorsement & methods requirements are as follows:

Social Science coursework required areas: economics, geography (IWU's -environmental studies with geography focus), history, civics & government (IWU's political science) + Social Science methods course EDUC 361 If additional hours needed can use electives in psychology, sociology, anthropology, religious studies |

Science coursework required areas: physical sciences (chemistry, physics, environmental studies), life sciences (biology, environmental studies), earth and space sciences (environmental studies, physics) + Science methods course EDUC 363 |

Math coursework: algebra, geometry, probability, and/or statistics (can use ECON 227/PSY 227 for statistics) are recommended + Math methods course EDUC 362. |
