Interdisciplinary Major and Minor
Non-Licensure candidates
The School of Educational Studies recognizes that many students have varying interests in education and child and family issues, but may not want to teach in the public schools. Courses relevant to all students interested in studying the processes, problems and prospects of education, and the relationship of educational institutions to other social institutions are offered. Any student who desires to work with developmentally, culturally and economically diverse children, adolescents and their families may pursue an interdisciplinary non-licensure major or minor in consultation with the School of Educational Studies faculty and faculty in related departments and schools.
Students can apply coursework in the School of Educational Studies to professional work in private industry, adult education, and/or related school services such as recreation, nursing or social services. The School of Educational Studies curriculum also supports student interest in graduate study in these areas as well as social services, comparative education, law, early childhood education, early intervention, child life, bilingual education, social work, public policy, and social policy. Students choose four courses (at least one upper level) to be selected from one of the following interdisciplinary concentration areas:

Major Course requirements (10 Units):
Note: This major does not lead to teacher certification.
- Educ 225 Education and Social Justice (CSI)
- Educ 255 Child Study and Assessment (W)
- Two electives in Educational Studies (pending concentration - requires advisor approval)
- Educ 497 Internship
- Educ 498 Educational inquiry (W), May be taken before or concurrent with 497.
- And four courses (at least one upper level) to be selected from one interdisciplinary concentration. (Two upper levels are required in the concentration if the School of Education electives are at the 100/200 level.)
Minor Course requirements (6 Units):
- Educ 225 Education and Social Justice (CSI)
- Educ 255 Child Study and Assessment (W)
- One elective in Educational Studies (pending concentration - requires advisor approval)
- Educ 497 Educational Inquiry (W) OR
Educ 498 Internship - And two courses (at least one upper level) to be selected from one interdisciplinary concentration.
