Ames Library Digital Humanities Summer Fellowship

The Ames Library is delighted to be able to offer its third annual Summer Digital Humanities (DH) Fellowship Program for students, to take place June 17th, 2024-July 19th, 2024. Past fellows worked on projects ranging from book censorship, to representations of chocolate in indigenous art, to community health in Bloomington-Normal, to international educational attainment, to exploring the connections between Zora Neale Hurston's playwriting and anthropological work: please explore their work here. The impact of their work reached beyond the program itself: after the program, they shared their work with the campus community, the Board of Trustees, and various community partners. The majority of last year's fellows successfully highlighted the impact of their DH experiences in applying for further internships and educational opportunities.

Fellowship Description

This experience will offer fellows a chance to explore the growing field of DH and conceptualize and carry out a project that employs its techniques. Students will have an opportunity to explore various DH projects and philosophies, meet with scholars across the country currently carrying out DH projects, and learn common DH tools and approaches.

This year's cohort will work in teams on various projects: we have a collaboration with the McLean History Museum linked to their installation of indigenous plants on the downtown Bloomington square, a project creating an online exhibit about the ways in which the library and librarians have responded to and fostered student interests and needs over IWU's history, and are working on finalizing a third project with a humanities focus. 

 

Eligibility

This program is open to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors. 

The Summer DH Fellowship is designed for all majors and all levels of experience! DH work is collaborative and takes advantage of the different skill sets of researchers: as a group, we will be reflecting on the skills you bring to your project and learn as you go, as well as the best ways to share and demonstrate those skills for future opportunities. Participants will develop critical thinking and analysis skills, specific technical skills, and communication and teamwork skills.

 
Commitment and Compensation
  • June 17th-July 19th, 2024
  • In-person experience
  • The expected work load is about 35 hours/week: after a first week intensive that immerses students in DH philosophy and projects, time will be spent on research and planning meetings, learning new skills, group reviews and reflections, and carrying out all the steps of the project itself.
  • Subsidized on-campus housing available for June and July  [Please note there is no dining hall service in the summer] 
  • Stipend of $2000
