Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Amendment Act

The federal government has enacted two phases of legislation aimed at preventing substance abuse.  The first phase, called The Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, requires Illinois Wesleyan to establish a policy on drug use by employees, including student employees, and to take additional steps toward maintaining a drug-free workplace.  The second phase of legislation, call the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989, requires the University to implement a program aimed at preventing the use of illicit drugs  and the abuse of alcohol.  To view Illinois Wesleyan’s policy related to the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Amendment Act, visit: https://www.iwu.edu/judicial/handbook/studenthandbookalcoholpolicy.html.

Federal Student Right to Know and Campus Security Act

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act is the federal law, originally known as the Campus Security Act, and requires colleges and universities across the country to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses.  Follow these links to view the latest Illinois Wesleyan Clery Report and Sexual Assault policy:

National Voter Registration Act

The 1998 Higher Education Act Mandatory Good Fair Effort for the National Voter Registration Act reads, in part, "The institution will make good faith effort to distribute a mail voter registration form, requested and received from the State, to each student enrolled in a degree or certificate program and physically in attendance at the institution, and to make such forms widely available to students at the institution."

Illinois Wesleyan University provides several voter registration programs each academic year.  As part our annual campus celebration of Constitution Day, a voter’s registration drive is made.  Campus voter registration drives are widely publicized and are open to the entire campus community.  Throughout the school year, individuals can also meet individually with the Associate Dean of Students who is authorized as a deputy registrar for McLean County to complete the registration process.

Selective Service Act

Congress has made Selective Service registration a requirement for obtaining a number of federal benefits including student loans, job training, government jobs, and citizenship for male immigrants.  Under Federal law, young men who do not register by the time they are 26 may never receive these benefits.  Additionally, although rarely prosecuted, failure to register is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.  The State of Illinois requires Selective Service registration as a precondition for state student financial aid (110 ILCS 5/30-17.1) and as a precondition for state employment.  Governor James Thompson signed these in 1984 and 1989, respectively.  On January 1, 2002, an Illinois law became effective requiring men to be registered with Selective Service to obtain a state driver's license.  Governor George Ryan signed this legislation on July 20, 2001.  To register for Selective Service, visit: http://www4.sss.gov/regver/register_nc.asp.

Sex Offenders Notification Act

The Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000 requires colleges and universities to inform students and employees how to learn the identity of registered sex offenders on campus. Sex offender information is maintained by the Illinois State Police in an online database. To learn the identity of registered sex offenders on or near campus, or anywhere in Illinois, visit: http://www.isp.state.il.us/sor.  Once there, you can search by city, county, or zip code.  Remember for searching for the area around Illinois Wesleyan, we are in McLean County and our zip code is 61701.
