American Academy of Arts & Sciences

The Academy seeks proposals that relate to its research areas: Humanities & Culture; Science, Technology & Global Security; Social Policy & American Institutions; and Education. Projects that address American cultural, social, or political issues from the founding period to the present are welcome, as are studies on the history of science. Scholars are chosen by means of a national competition. Applications are reviewed by Academy Fellows expert in the candidates' fields.

American Chemical Society

The goals of ACS Petroleum Research Fund are: 1. To support fundamental research in the petroleum field. 2. To develop the next generation of engineers and scientists through support of advanced scientific education.  

The Undergraduate Research (UR) grants program supports the research programs of established scientists and engineers at non-doctoral departments and provides financial support for students at those institutions to become involved in advanced research activities, in preparation for continued study in graduate school or employment.

The Undergraduate New Investigator Grants Program is intended to initiate the research program of new scientists and engineers who are faculty members at undergraduate research institutions and to provide financial incentives for students at those institutions to become involved in research activities leading to employment or continued study in graduate school.

Centennial Fellowships provide one-year fellowships for research in mathematics.

Council of American Overseas Research Centers

The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) Multi-Country Fellowship Program supports advanced regional or trans-regional research in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences for U.S. doctoral candidates and scholars who have already earned their Ph.D. Preference will be given to candidates examining comparative and/or cross-regional research. Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or in teams.

Council for International Exchange of Scholars

The core Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year. Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.

The Fulbright Specialist Program (FSP) promotes linkages between U.S. academics and professionals and their counterparts at host institutions overseas. The program is designed to award grants to qualified U.S. faculty and professionals, in select disciplines, to engage in short-term collaborative 2 to 6 week projects at host institutions in over 100 countries worldwide. International travel costs and a stipend are funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Participating host institutions cover grantee in-country expenses or provide in-kind services.

Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation

The Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program supports the research and teaching careers of talented young faculty in the chemical sciences. Based on institutional nominations, the program provides discretionary funding to faculty at an early stage in their careers. Criteria for selection include an independent body of scholarship attained within the first five years of their appointment as independent researchers, and a demonstrated commitment to education, signaling the promise of continuing outstanding contributions to both research and teaching. The Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program provides an unrestricted research grant of $75,000.

The Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program supports the research and teaching careers of talented young faculty in the chemical sciences. Based on institutional nominations, the program provides discretionary funding to faculty at an early stage in their careers. The Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program is based on accomplishment in scholarly research with undergraduates, as well as a compelling commitment to teaching. The Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program provides an unrestricted research grant of $60,000.

Ford Foundation

The Ford Postdoctoral Fellowship program provides one year of support for individuals engaged in postdoctoral study after the attainment of the Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree.

Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation

The foundation welcomes proposals from any of the natural and social sciences and the humanities that promise to increase understanding of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence and aggression ($15,000 to $40,000). Highest priority is given to research that can increase understanding and amelioration of urgent problems of violence and aggression in the modern world.

The National Humanities Center offers 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities during the academic year.  In addition to scholars from all fields of the humanities, the Center accepts individuals from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects.

NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) Program (R15) supports small-scale research projects in the biomedical and behavior sciences conducted by faculty and students at educational institutions that have not been major recipients (~$6 million per year in NIH support in each of 4 of the last 7 years) of NIH research funds.

Research Corporation for Science Advancement

The Cottrell College Science Award (CCSA) program, RCSA's oldest initiative, was created in the early 1970s to promote basic research as a vital component of undergraduate education at primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs). Over the decades the CCSA program has consistently:

  • Strengthened teacher-scholars while supporting high-quality research at PUIs;
  • Helped early career faculty to become competitive for federal funding;
