Resources for Family Members
Parents and family members play a very significant role in their students' educational experience. Illinois Wesleyan University views our relationship with parents and family members as a partnership in supporting the academic and personal success of students. Family members should help students understand the importance of taking ownership for their own academic and personal success. Students at IWU are expected to contact campus resources themselves when they have questions and concerns, especially involving academic advising. IWU views students as responsible, independent, young adults who are learning and developing throughout their college experience.
Parents and other family members can help facilitate healthy development in their students by understanding this relationship, being knowledgeable about campus resources as well as policies and procedures, providing information to their students about how to be successful at IWU, and expecting their students to take an active role themselves in their experience at IWU.
The following are helpful resources for family members:
- IWU's Family Member Checklist for advising to help foster student success.
- The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. This link to the U.S. Department of Education site helps to explain some of the rights of students and their families.
- College 101 by Dr. Drew Appleby provides tips, as well as explains the academic expectations that students will face for family members.
